Carroll County Mental Health Advocates
Our Mission
Our Mission
The mission of the Carroll County Mental Health Advocates (CMHA) is to be the missing link for individuals and their families impacted by mental health and substance misuse challenges.
History of Carroll County Mental Health Advocates (CMHA)
Carroll County Mental Health Advocates (CMHA) was founded in 2008 when a group of concerned community leaders—including representatives from Probate Court, law enforcement, treatment providers, and other local agencies—came together to address the growing mental health crisis in Carroll County. Through those early conversations, one critical need became clear: there was a missing link in the continuum of care—an advocate who could walk alongside individuals facing mental health challenges, help them better understand their diagnosis and treatment options, and connect them with the resources and support needed to navigate recovery, stability, and hope.
In its early years, CMHA operated as a volunteer-led organization with no paid staff, driven by a shared passion for serving the community. In 2018, the organization took an important step forward by establishing a formal Board of Directors and hiring its first part-time Director and Case Manager.
CMHA continued to grow in both impact and capacity, receiving federal grant funding through SAMHSA in 2020 to expand programs and staffing, followed by Department of Justice funding in 2021 to strengthen and expand the Carroll County Crisis Response Team. In 2022, The Recovery Spot of West Georgia opened its doors as a Recovery Community Organization under the CMHA umbrella, creating a dedicated space for peer support, recovery resources, and community connection. In 2023, a second Crisis Response Team was launched, further expanding access to critical behavioral health services throughout the county.
Today, CMHA has grown into a fully peer-led organization, with leadership rooted in lived experience at every level—from program directors to frontline staff. We provide peer-based, non-clinical support services for individuals and families impacted by mental health and substance use challenges throughout Carroll County and the surrounding communities.
As we continue to grow, our mission remains the same: to empower individuals and families by building hope, fostering connection, and creating pathways toward lasting recovery, wellness, and community belonging.
