Maternal Peer Support

Maternal Peer Support

Helping mothers move from services to sustainable change.

Motherhood can be challenging under the best circumstances. When you add recovery, active substance use, pregnancy, parenting challenges, DFCS involvement, Family Treatment Court, reunification, or other life circumstances, navigating everything at once can feel overwhelming.

You don’t have to navigate it alone.

Maternal Peer Support connects mothers with someone who understands—not because they have all the answers, but because they have lived experience and can walk alongside them without judgment.

What is Maternal Peer Support?

Maternal Peer Support is non-clinical, relationship-based support provided by someone with lived experience.

A Maternal Peer Support Specialist walks alongside a mother as she works toward the goals that matter to her and her family.

We complement the work of DFCS, Family Treatment Court, treatment providers, healthcare providers, and other family-serving organizations by providing something different:

Connection • Lived Experience • Hope • Accountability

Peer support isn’t about telling a mother what she should do. It’s about helping her recognize that change is possible—and supporting her as she takes the next steps.

Who Can We Support?

Maternal Peer Support may be helpful for mothers who are:

  • Pregnant & Parenting: Support during pregnancy and motherhood, including navigating the everyday challenges and transitions that come with being a mother.
  • In Recovery: Support for mothers working toward recovery, maintaining recovery, or strengthening their recovery while navigating motherhood.
  • Actively Using Substances: Mothers who are currently using substances can receive support without judgment. Peer support can help create connection, identify goals, reduce barriers, and build a pathway toward change.
  • Involved with DFCS: Support for mothers involved with the Department of Family and Children Services who are working toward stability, reunification, and positive outcomes for their families.
  • Involved with Family Treatment Court: Peer support can complement Family Treatment Court by helping mothers stay connected, engaged, accountable, and supported throughout the process.
  • Working Toward Reunification: For mothers working to rebuild relationships with their children and navigate the many steps involved in reunification.
  • Navigating Other Challenges: Motherhood doesn’t come with a single set of circumstances. Peer support can also help mothers facing housing instability, transportation barriers, relationship challenges, employment concerns, isolation, or difficulty navigating systems and resources.

What Does a Maternal Peer Support Specialist Do?

A Maternal Peer Support Specialist walks alongside a mother—not ahead of her.

Together, they can work on:

  • Staying engaged in treatment and other services
  • Identifying and overcoming barriers
  • Navigating systems and resources
  • Building healthy support networks
  • Strengthening parenting and family relationships
  • Setting goals and following through
  • Building confidence and self-advocacy
  • Staying connected through setbacks
  • Preparing for and working toward reunification
  • Building the skills and support needed for long-term stability

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress.

More Than Compliance.

Sustainable Change.

For mothers involved with systems such as DFCS or Family Treatment Court, there can be a lot of requirements to meet.

Those requirements matter.

But checking every box doesn’t automatically create lasting change.

A mother also needs connection, encouragement, accountability, practical support, and someone who believes in her ability to build a different future.

Without connection: Overwhelmed → Disengaged → Setbacks

With Maternal Peer Support: Connected → Supported → Engaged → Empowered

Peer support helps mothers move from:

“I have to do this.”

to

“I want to build a better life for myself and my family.”

We Don't Replace the Team.

We Strengthen It.

Maternal Peer Support works alongside the professionals and systems already supporting a mother.

A Different Kind of Support

A peer may understand what it feels like to:

  • Be overwhelmed by motherhood
  • Try to navigate multiple systems at once
  • Feel judged because of past or present substance use
  • Work toward reunification
  • Start over after setbacks
  • Rebuild trust with family
  • Feel like everyone is telling you what to do
  • Wonder if things can actually get better

Peer support creates space for honesty, hope, and growth.

You don’t have to pretend everything is okay.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

You just have to be willing to take the next step.

Your Story Doesn't End Here.

Whether you’re pregnant, parenting, working toward recovery, involved with DFCS or Family Treatment Court, or working toward reunification, where you are today does not have to determine where you go next.

A Maternal Peer Support Specialist can walk beside you as you work toward a healthier, more stable future for yourself and your family.

You don’t have to do this alone!
